The Pats made a series of moves off the ice last week as well.

After releasing import defenceman Manuel Schams earlier in the month, the Pats added an import to the lineup as the club claimed 2007-born Russian forward Ruslan Karimov.

The 18-year-old Karimov played for the Ontario Hockey League’s Sarnia Sting last season, registered 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points in 55 games. He was previously selected by Sarnia sixth overall in the 2024 CHL import draft.

Regina also made three trades last week as the Pats sent veteran goaltender Kelton Pyne, 20, to the Vancouver Giants for a 2028 sixth-round pick.

Pyne, a White City product who had been with the Pats since 2021, played two games this season going 0-0-1 with a 5.76 goals-against average and an .818 save percentage. In his career, Pyne played 104 games going 31-47-14 with a 3.97 GAA and an .880 save percentage with three shutouts.

With a 20-year-old roster spot open, the Pats then acquired defenceman Carter Kowalyk from the Seattle Thunderbirds for a 2027 seventh-round pick.

Kowalyk, a St. Albert, Alta. product, was previously acquired by Seattle from the Kelowna Rockets in September. Last season, he was part of a three-team trade that saw him go from Edmonton to Kelowna.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound blueliner has 33 points and 218 penalty minutes in 177 career games. He helped the Oil Kings win the WHL championship in 2022.

The Pats also sent 2007-born defenceman Brayden Smith to Lethbridge in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2028 and eighth-round pick in 2027.

The 6-foot-1, 181-pound Smith had been with the Pats since being drafted by the club in 2022. In his career, the Saskatoon native had nine points in 61 games.

Pat Canadians

When Maddox Schultz and Liam Pue aren’t in the lineup for the Pats, the two 15-year-olds are helping the Regina Pat Canadians in the Saskatchewan Male Under-18 AAA Hockey League. It was also announced last week they’ll be suiting up for Team Canada White at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

After both got the night off on Friday night while the Pats were in Prince Albert, Pue played for the Pats on Saturday against Brandon while Schultz was in the lineup for the Pat Canadians, who picked up a 4-1 win over the Battlefords Stats. Schultz had a goal and assist in the victory.

On Sunday, both were in the lineup for the Pat Canadians, who picked up a second straight 4-1 win over Battlefords. Pue had two goals and two assists in the win while Schultz had a goal and two assists as the Pat Canadians improved to 7-1-0 on the season.

So far at the U18 level, Schultz has 16 points in six games while Pue has 12 points in five games. The Pat Canadians will now get set to host the Saskatoon Blazers on Thursday at the Cooperators Arena.
