“We need this extra time”
- by Fraser Gilbert
Well, it’s official! Rockstar Games has announced that GTA 6 will be getting a delay to May 2026, with the team insisting that more time is needed to “exceed” the expectations of the GTA fanbase.
GTA 6 now has an Xbox release date of May 26th, 2026 for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.
With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
This obviously frees up the Fall 2025 window for publishers who previously didn’t want to compete with GTA 6, so perhaps things might suddenly look busier in the months to come. Unfortunately, Fable has already been delayed to 2026, so it’ll be interesting to see how Xbox navigates its release next year – definitely not in May!
It stings a little bit to know that we won’t be playing GTA 6 for another 12 months, but it’s been 13 years of waiting at this point, so another year is manageable. Let’s just hope we get another trailer at some point in the near future.
