Israel is still weighing up launching a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Israel is still considering launching a limited military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities without full U.S. support, an Israeli official and two other people familiar with the matter told Reuters. Despite President Trump urging diplomacy, Israeli officials insist Tehran’s nuclear ambitions require urgent action.

Trump recently told Prime Minister Netanyahu that Washington prioritizes talks over military intervention. However, Israel now eyes smaller-scale strikes needing minimal American backing, with plans include airstrikes and commando raids to delay Iran’s nuclear progress.

U.S. and Iranian negotiators meet in Rome on Saturday, prioritizing dialogue over military action, though Trump emphasizes diplomacy he left room for “very bad” outcomes if talks fail. Israel, however, seeks guarantees against Iranian nuclear capabilities.

Timing Concerns and Regional Risks

Experts warn strikes might only temporarily stall Iran’s program. A senior Iranian official vowed “harsh retaliation” if attacked. Meanwhile, U.S. National Security Council reiterated Trump’s stance: “No rush for military action.”

However, Israel demands guarantees blocking Iran’s path to nuclear weapons before supporting revived negotiations. Netanyahu advocates a “Libyan-style” dismantling of Iran’s facilities under U.S. oversight.

Recent Israeli strikes weakened Iran-aligned groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. With Tehran rebuilding air defenses, officials hint at narrowing windows for action. No timeline exists, but urgency grows.

Biden’s Skepticism and Practical Hurdles

Previous Israeli proposals required heavy U.S. involvement, which Biden rejected unless Iran escalated enrichment or expelled inspectors. Analysts doubt Israel’s capacity to cripple underground sites alone.

“Iran deserves peace, but military options remain,” Trump stated. Israel seeks U.S. pledges for post-strike defense aid, fearing Iranian retaliation. Netanyahu faces pressure to act amid political challenges. Yet alienating Washington risks losing critical support. As talks resume, Middle East stability hangs in the balance.
