A key tax date for homeowners, a nationwide transport strike, and special art venue openings in Venice: here’s what to expect in Italy this week.

Monday

Property tax deadline

The first instalment of Italy’s main property tax, IMU (Imposta Municipale Unica, or Unified Municipal Tax) must be paid by Monday, June 16th, with the second payment due on December 16th.

The tax is often a cause of confusion among homeowners in Italy, as the rules on which types of property it applies to have changed a few times over the years.

Regional rail strike in Lombardy

Staff at Trenord, the company running many of the rail services in Italy’s northern Lombardy region, plan to strike from 3am on Monday, June 16th to 2am on Tuesday, June 17th.

There may be delays or cancellations to regional and local services run by Trenord, including services to and from Milan’s Malpensa Airport.

Tuesday

Heatwave set to break

Italy’s first real heatwave of the summer is set to ease off by Tuesday, according to forecasts, following storms and unsettled conditions in some areas.

Temperatures and humidity levels should fall back to seasonal averages after many parts of the country, including Rome, sweltered in 36-38 degrees Celsius over the past week.

Thursday and Friday

General transport strike

Air, rail and local public transport services around Italy could be affected by a 24-hour general strike on the evening of Thursday, June 19th and during the day on Friday, June 20th.

The walkout is set to affect rail services between 9pm on Thursday and 9pm on Friday, according to Italy’s transport ministry.

Flights to, from and across Italy may be affected by delays or cancellations on Friday, the ministry said. See the latest updates in this article.

Friday

Summer solstice

June 20th this year marks summer solstice, when Italy will have its longest day of the year at around 15 hours of daylight.

Daytime on Italy’s summer solstice lasts approximately six hours longer than on the shortest day of the year (winter solstice), December 21st.
