Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky cut short his first visit to South Africa following an overnight Russian missile and drone attack on the capital Kyiv. At least nine people died and more than 80 were injured, including children, as local officials reported. Zelensky announced his immediate return to Ukraine after meeting South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. He emphasized ongoing rescue efforts and condemned the attack, noting a 44-day ceasefire agreement had collapsed.
Diplomatic Shifts in Africa
The visit marked a breakthrough for Ukraine’s outreach to Africa, countering Russia’s influence. Previously, South Africa’s neutral stance on Ukraine frustrated Kyiv. However, both nations now align against Washington’s policies.
South Africa, expelled from U.S. aid programs, claims its non-aligned status positions it as a peace mediator. Ramaphosa discussed ending the war with Donald Trump, stressing urgency to halt “unnecessary deaths”.
Trump accused Zelensky of derailing peace talks after Ukraine rejected recognizing Crimea as Russian. The U.S. proposed a deal freezing territorial lines, requiring concessions from both sides.
Zelensky insists Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, remains Ukrainian. Accepting Russian control would violate international norms against force-driven border changes.
Peace Talks Stumble
US Vice President JD Vance outlined a plan for Ukraine and Russia to cede territory. However, Zelensky’s firm stance on Crimea risks prolonging the conflict. Trump reiterated his focus on ending the war but avoided endorsing Crimea’s annexation.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister will continue diplomatic talks in South Africa, aiming to strengthen partnerships amid shifting global alliances.
