A new chapter in Trinidad and Tobago’s sporting history will be written this weekend as runners from across the world gather for the country’s first-ever Midnight Marathon.
Organised by Bafasports, the event officially begins at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, starting and ending at the iconic Queen’s Park Savannah Grand Stand in Port of Spain.
This is not your typical race. With a start time deep into the night and a route bathed in moonlight, the Trinidad & Tobago Midnight Marathon offers athletes a striking new way to experience endurance racing, against the quiet hum of the sleeping city, the rhythm of steelpan and the glow of streetlights guiding the way.
More than 500 runners are expected to hit the course, including individual marathoners and teams taking on the event’s 10-person relay format. The response has been overwhelming, with the event completely sold out across all race categories.
Athletes from Kenya, Colombia, Jamaica, St Lucia, Venezuela and the United States will join local runners at the start line, signalling a growing interest in marathon tourism and highlighting Trinidad and Tobago’s potential as a destination for global endurance events.
The list of participants includes T&T runners Christopher Mitchell and Sjaelan Evans, Kenyan Alex Ekesa, Colombian Palmenia Agudelo Berrio and Canadian Karen Michelsen.
“This event is about more than just finishing a race. It’s about promoting a lifestyle of health, wellness and personal growth,” said Nigel Bellamy, CEO of Bafasports. “At the same time, we’re showcasing our country’s spirit and scenery to the world. The Midnight Marathon is helping put T&T on the international marathon map.”
The 26.2-mile course begins with a lap around the Savannah before heading east via the Priority Bus Route, turning around just past the Eddie Hart Savannah in Tacarigua and returning to the capital for a Carnival-style finish. The route has been certified by World Athletics, thanks to the work of official course measurer Irwin Medina, who also trained Bellamy during the process.
Bafasports has ensured that the event meets world-class standards for safety and logistics. The course will be completely closed to vehicles, supported by over 60 members of the protective services, along with hydration stations, medical personnel and race photographers capturing every stride.
All finishers will receive a glow-in-the-dark medal, while runners who completed the full Midnight Series—March’s 10K, April’s Half Marathon and Sunday’s Marathon—will walk away with a set of Carnival-inspired interlocking medals.
After crossing the finish line, participants can celebrate with a high-energy last lap lime, featuring live music, breakfast and plenty vibes.
