I WANTED to bring to your attention the Government’s plan to distribute laptops this coming September—a very positive and much-needed initiative.

As part of this process, I am kindly asking that special consideration be given to ensure children who are blind or visually impaired are not left behind. These students require laptops that are equipped with appropriate assistive technologies in order to access learning materials on an equal footing with their peers.

Specifically, their devices should include:

• screen reader software (such as NVDA or JAWS)

• screen magnification software

• support for refreshable Braille displays.

The refreshable Braille display is a key peripheral device for many blind students. It must be connected to the laptop via USB or Bluetooth to function properly. Without this support, these students will face significant challenges in keeping up with the curriculum.

This is a crucial opportunity to promote inclusive education and ensure digital equity for all students, especially those with disabilities. I trust that steps will be taken to make this distribution as inclusive and accessible as possible.
