Now a member of the Regina Thunder, who deploy him as a multi-purpose back and part-time quarterback, Harnett helped end his former team’s season with a 49-10 semifinal victory over the Huskies on Sunday at Leibel Field. Harnett gained 209 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns, a dominant performance he would like to repeat in the PFC final slated for Sunday, 1 p.m., at Mosaic Stadium against the Saskatoon Hilltops.

“I expect the exact same outcome as we had during the season if we all stick to our assignments,” said Harnett. “If we execute the way the Regina Thunder can execute, it’s going to look a lot like that final game against Saskatoon.”

In his fifth season with the Huskies, Harnett requested his release after being demoted to second-string quarterback.

At 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, incredibly fast and capable of throwing the football, Harnett contacted the Thunder and in three games has played numerous positions. Harnett said he wasn’t promised anything beforehand.

“They told me I’d have to prove myself out there,” said Harnett. “I’ve been doing that, playing my game.

“They brought me for my feet and my brains. I’m able to see the field. I know where my open targets are, I know where my boys are and I’m able to read a defence.”

Harnett and Adam Mosher have been platooning as Regina’s quarterbacks.

“It’s all about winning; that’s most important,” said Mosher. “My game is playing in the pocket and throwing the ball.

“Harnett’s done an a phenomenal job running the ball and giving us another element out there. He’s broken some big runs in positions where we’re needing it, so it’s definitely helping.”

Harnett got more playing time after Mosher threw two end-zone interceptions against the Huskies. Those picks barely slowed an offence that got two touchdowns from receiver Andrew Sweeney and one from PFC rushing leader Peter Boersch, who gained 1,327 yards during the regular season. Teammate Carter Ashman added 660 rushing yards in a backup role.

Regina gained 402 rushing yards with Mosher adding another 165 passing yards. Regina also got a safety plus five converts, three field goals and three singles from kicker Shawn Green. After scoring Regina’s final touchdown on a 94-yard rush, Harnett met numerous Huskies players and coaches at midfield for hugs, handshakes and pleasantries. Harnett wasn’t gloating.
